"Human Interest"
January 6 - January 31, 2004
Reception: Sat., Jan 10, 2004, 4 - 7 pm
I put on my canvas what fascinates us, humans, the most - other people. My goal is to transform my subjects from individual and ephemeral into symbolic and eternal. I look in my subjects for the truth in their reality, hoping for my paintings to be a bit sacrilegious but beautiful.

"Knowing...Remembering: A Look Back"
June 22 - July 17, 2004
Reception: Sat., June 26, 2004, 4 - 7 pm
Concerns for the future of our planet started showing up in my work, often informed by what I was reading at the time. As I worked in my studio in the cahos of the many collage elements, something magical happened: the objects became transformed symbolically. Then -- there came a flash of knowing or a sensing of lost memories, or a feeling of other times, other lives lived, and the sense of my soul whispering to me. Thus, knowing. Remembering came into being.

Dan LaVigne
"Facing North"
July 20 - August 14, 2004
Reception: Sat., July 24 2004, 4 - 7 pm
An assemblage of small to medium sized oil paintings chronicle Dan’s arrival at a mature style while literally describing a new direction - a move away from the Los Angeles art scene and toward Ventura, Santa Barbara and northern California. The paintings speak of a quiet reverence for the natural world, evoking a reflective mood though a skillful use of light and shadow and the whimsical inclusion of small creatures who seem to have wandered into his studio.

Sylvia Torres/Cheryl Thomas
"Two Women, One Vision"
August 17 - September 11, 2004
Reception: Sat., August 21, 2004, 4 - 7 pm
In the most ancient of art mediums, painter Sylvia Torres and sculptor Cheryl Thomas, create very contemporary works resplendent in delicate beauty.
Torres' abstracts painted in encaustic in many layers, each fused with heat to the layer beneath. Each layer adds to the translucency unique to the medium.
Thomas handbuilds sensuous forms and vessels from tiny coils of porcelain and stoneware, and when fired, have they appearance of unearthed remnants from the past. In fact, the artists names her work RELICS.
There is a dialog between the works of these artists, resonating a harmony and spiritual place of well being.

November 9 - January 8, 2005
Reception: Sat., November 13, 2004, 4 - 7 pm
This exhibit will combine the talents of two accomplished local artists as they examine their hometown of Ventura in watercolor and photography. Katherine McGuire creates watercolors of local townscapes that evoke warm sunny days and romantic vistas filled with historical architecture. Schaf has combed the back roads of America shooting black & white photos documenting small-town Americana. For this exhibit, they will train their eyes, brushes and lenses on ten Ventura scenes; five chosen by Schaf and five by McGuire, to create 20 new images. They will explore similarities and contrasts of the two distinct medias and their two distinct visions.
